Every family with a child under five in England is entitled to regular health and development reviews. They're free, designed to support you as much as your baby, and you should use them.
The schedule
Within 72 hours: physical examination (eyes, heart, hips, testicles). 5-8 days: heel prick blood test. First few weeks: newborn hearing test. 10-14 days: new baby review (safe sleep, feeding, vaccinations, how you're adjusting). 6-8 weeks: GP physical examination plus check on your emotional and physical recovery. 9-12 months: language, learning, safety, diet review (ASQ-3 questionnaire). 2-2.5 years: the most comprehensive review covering development, movement, speech, social skills, behaviour, hearing, vision, teeth, and safety.
The red book
Your personal child health record containing weight and height charts, vaccination records, and milestones. Take it to every appointment.
Between reviews
You can contact your health visitor or attend a local baby clinic any time. Don't wait for the next scheduled check. If your baby was born prematurely, developmental age is calculated from your due date until they're two.
